About Us

St. Augustine's is a hospitable community that is reflective of the community surrounding Arizona State University. St. Augustine's is a university parish comprising itself of faculty, staff, students and those living in the City of Tempe. The congregation is diverse, multigenerational and theologically open.

Over 50 years ago, some Episcopal faculty, staff and students began meeting in Danforth Chapel on the ASU Tempe campus. After two years the growing congregation purchased two acres of land at the corner of Broadway and College - just a ten-minute stroll south of the heart of the Tempe campus. St. A's is still actively ministering from this location.

With volunteers, the congregation built the first building, the current parish hall. Gathering on Saturdays, the men dug the foundation, poured the floor and laid the block walls. One of the women of the parish would bring a case of beer to cool the thirst of the working parishioners. As the men built the walls they would put their empty beer cans down the walls. We are still blessed with men in our parish who tell this story first hand. It speaks of the love and hard work of a generation of men and women who have sacrificed to bring the parish to life.

The current sanctuary was built in the early 1960's. It is reflective of the architecture and style of a unique era. With a high-sloping roof, the interior represents Noah's Ark. The outside looks like a modern-day half pipe snowboarders paradise.

The sanctuary has symbolic stained glass windows and its walls are adorned with the beautifully crafted Stations of the Cross. A hand carved wooden Christi Pax hangs above the altar. You will find that the space evokes the peace and restfulness intended of its designers.
